Samsung Galaxy S8 vs LG G6

The two most anticipated Android phones of the year are now official: Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and LG’s G6. In this article we aim to discover the key specification differences to help you make an informed purchasing decision, though you should also check out our LG G6 review and Samsung Galaxy S8 review for more in-depth details.

Price

The Galaxy S8 is available to pre-order now and will officially go on sale on 28 April. It’s available SIM-free for £689, and you can check out the best Galaxy S8 deals here.

Meanwhile, LG still hasn’t confirmed the official UK release date and pricing for the G6. It’s expected to go on sale around 7 April at around £699, but that would make it more expensive than the higher-specified Galaxy S8 so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Design

Following the lead of Xiaomi and its Mi Mix, the trend for this year’s flagship phones looks sets to be bezel-free designs. Not only does this look great, but also means you get a larger screen on a phone that’s not a great deal bigger than before.

The LG G6 boasts an impressive Quad HD 5.7in display with an aspect ratio of 18:9, taller than the standard 16:9. The Galaxy S8 has a more standard widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, but it has increased the display size from 5.1in to a whopping 5.8in. And this has been achieved without significantly changing the case size, with the physical home button now gone from the front.

LG has moved away from the modular design of the LG G5 and has ditched the removable battery in favour of waterproofing and a more aesthetic metal body. The fingerprint scanner remains on the back.

This is also where you’ll now find the fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S8, sitting to the right of the rear camera, but a software home button remains at the front on a pressure-sensitive area of the display that acts as a physical button.

The dual-curved-edge screen seen on last year’s Galaxy S7 edge model is now standard across the range, and also new is Gorilla Glass 5 front and back.

Specs and features

The headline feature of both the G6 and Galaxy S8 is the screen, so we’ll focus on that.

Starting with Samsung, the Galaxy S8 has a 5.8in screen with a Quad-HD+ resolution of 2960×1440 pixels and a dual-curved edge. The larger Galaxy S8 Plus has a 6.2in display, also with a Quad-HD+ resolution.

The LG G6 has a big screen, but it’s not quite as large as its rival at 5.7in. Interestingly it has an 18:9 aspect ratio (yes that’s 2:1) with a 1440×2880-pixel resolution.

We’ll sum up the specs of each phone below to give you an overview but another interesting element to talk about is the processor. While the Galaxy S8 is powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, the LG G6 comes with the older, slower and less energy-efficient Snapdragon 821 instead.

Key takeaways from the spec sheets is that the G6 has dual cameras, as per the G5, while the Galaxy S8 sticks with last year’s 12Mp camera. Also see: Best phones 2017

OUR VERDICT

The Galaxy S8 has a higher specification than the LG G6 in terms of core hardware, but the pair are reasonably fairly matched in terms of the display, design and key features. It’s impossible to make a choice between the two without knowing the LG G6 pricing, and having had both in our lab for proper testing, but if it does come in as more expensive than the Galaxy S8 as expected then it would be difficult to justify choosing the G6 over Samsung’s flagship.
