HMD opens Nokia 8 Android 8.1 Oreo beta program – The Android Soul

One of the things that HMD Global is using to attract people to buy the Nokia 8 and other Nokia phones is the promise of timely software updates, just like Google does with the Pixel phones.

So far, the Finnish company hasn’t disappointed. The Nokia 8 received the first Oreo beta build before the end of October 2017 and a month later, the stable version was ready for download. The OS has further been rolled to the Nokia 7, Nokia 6 and Nokia 5 while the likes of Nokia 3 and Nokia 2 are waiting in the wings. In fact, the recently-launched Nokia 6 2018, which has been confirmed to come with Android Nougat out of the box, has already received the update to Oreo.

Following in the footsteps of Google, HMD is now rolling out the newer Android 8.1 Oreo to the Nokia 8, but as you would expect, this is a beta version. One notable thing the update brings is a fix to the hamburger emoji, which now has the cheese on top of the patty.

Android 8.1 also came with a new dark theme that has so far been exclusive to the Google Pixel 2 and recently received a feature that shows users the speed of open Wi-Fi networks. Hopefully, these little nifty additions – and other refinements – are part of the new Nokia 8 Oreo update.
